Special Friends

The Special Friends Program is a one-to-one and small group friendship program which enhances the education experience and personal development of children. Our goal is to help children get off to a good start in school by fostering positive social skills, a healthy self concept, and a positive bonding experience within school.

How are Children Selected for the Program?

All students in kindergarten through third grade are screened to help identify those children who might benefit most from this program. Additional input from parents and teachers is sought before a child is selected.

How the Program Works

Once a child is accepted into the program, a Child Associate (Special Friend) will dedicate 30-40 minutes once a week to be with the child in the playroom.

Who are the Child Associates

Child Associates are paraprofessionals selected for their warmth and ability to relate well to other adults and children. They need to be able to communicate effectively with teachers, parents and other school staff.

Special Friends are chosen for their interpersonal skills, motivation, interest in the program, a positive attitude toward school, and, of course, the enjoyment of working with children. They receive training and periodic review from a school site supervisor.

Parents will be invited to visit the playroom and meet their child's Special Friend.
