Sarah Oskey Named June 2018 Mentor of the Month

Calaveras County, June 1, 2018 – The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is pleased to honor Sarah Oskey as June 2018 Mentor of the Month. Sarah has been matched with her 14-year-old mentee, Sofia, for a year and a half.

“The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is successful because of volunteers like Sarah,” said Katie Lackler, coordinator of the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program. “She has a kind heart, a great sense of humor, and despite her busy schedule and life changes, it’s clear that her friendship with Sofia takes priority.”

One of Sarah’s favorite memories of her time with Sofia is when they learned to make sushi. “Sofia did a much better job than I did!” said Sarah. During their time together, they have shared a love of cooking and good food, as well as new experiences like rock climbing at Class 5 Fitness in Sonora.

Sarah and Sofia’s friendship has continued to grow despite several moves and changes in jobs and schools. Sofia says, “Every day Sarah came over would make my whole day.” Sofia likes being in the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program because she gets to meet new people.

“She is such a fun person to be around. I love it when we get together and she’s bursting with stories. We laugh a lot!” said Sarah.

Sarah grew up in Arnold and moved back to the Sierra Foothills with her husband, Tim Oskey, almost four years ago. She was looking for a volunteer opportunity when she and Tim received tickets to THE PARTY, the annual fundraiser to support mentoring programs in Calaveras County. Soon after attending THE PARTY and learning about mentoring, Sarah applied to become a mentor with the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program.

Sarah also volunteers with Friends of the Fair and is a full-time financial advisor with Edward Jones in Murphys. If she could tell prospective mentors one thing, she says, it would be “just do it! It becomes a natural part of your life and the reward is so great.”

THE PARTY is happening this year at Chatom Winery on Friday, June 15 from 6-10pm. The evening will feature lively music by local horn-driven big band Blow Daddy, a live auction, and a delicious meal prepared by Lunch Lady Catering. There will also be treasure chest keys for a chance to unlock a twelve-day Hawaiian cruise for two. Tickets and keys are available at CalaverasMentoring.org.

The Mentoring Program is currently seeking mentors for boys and girls in all areas of Calaveras County. For more information about the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program, call Katie Lackler, Mentoring Program coordinator, at (209) 736-6078 or visit online at www.calaverasmentoring.org.
